Jeffrey Gibson's exhibition for the U.S. Pavilion, the space in which to place me, is presented by the Portland Art Museum (Oregon) and SITE Santa Fe (New Mexico) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs. Curated by Kathleen Ash-Milby and Abigail Winograd.
Established in 1895, La Biennale di Venezia is a renowned cultural institution that hosts what is considered the most prestigious global contemporary art exhibition, introducing hundreds of thousands of visitors to exciting new art every two years. The 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (April 20–November 24, 2024) is curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
The United States Pavilion opened on May 4, 1930. Since 1986, it has been owned by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, and managed by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, which works closely with the U.S. Department of State and exhibition curators to install and maintain all official U.S. exhibitions presented in the Pavilion.
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State designs and implements educational, professional, and cultural exchanges and other programs that create and sustain the mutual understanding with other countries necessary to advancing U.S. foreign policy goals. ECA programs cultivate people-to-people ties among current and future global leaders that build enduring networks and personal relationships and promote U.S. national security and values.
The title of the exhibition is an excerpt from the poem “Ȟe Sápa,” part three, by Layli Long Soldier.
Explore a series of audio insights from the pavilion curators, 24 extended wall texts, information on public and educational programs, an interactive map of the exhibition, and more on Bloomberg Connects, the official app for the Biennale Arte 2024.
